The county seat of Grayson County, Texas, Sherman is a wonderful place to call home. This town of 35,000 people features a healthy mix of people. It includes plenty of households with underage children, as well as homes occupied by single individuals, married couples, and retirees. This college town also draws lots of young people into the two local universities in town.

Located right on highway 75, it’s a quick drive just north of Dallas, and it also offers easy access to Denison to the north and Gainesville to the west.

Besides being close to bigger cities, though, Sherman is also nearby to some of Texas’s most beautiful natural areas. Just to the northwest of the city you’ll find the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge features hiking and biking trails, fishing, boating, campgrounds, hunting, and more. It’s a great place to retreat to the quiet and beauty of nature on a long weekend. To the southwest of town, you’ll find Lake Ray Roberts, a sprawling lake that also makes for a great getaway. And east of Lake Ray Roberts you’ll find yet another beautiful natural area, the Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands.

With the outskirts of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area just half an hour’s drive south of Sherman, many of the city’s residents work in the larger metropolitan area, but choose to live in smaller, calmer, and quieter Sherman. With that said, Sherman itself holds many business and job opportunities for its residents.

Education in Sherman

The majority of students in Sherman are a part of the Sherman Independent School District, although others are served by the Denison Independent School District or the Howe Independent School District. The Sherman ISD has one high school, one middle school, one intermediate school, and seven elementary schools. The high school is classed as AAAA for athletic competitions.

Sherman High School’s football program is competitive among other similar-sized schools in the area. In 2005, the team set a Texas record for having the worst season record but still qualifying for district playoffs, with a record of 3-8. The team was in the playoffs in 2006, 2008, and 2009, as well.

The Sherman High School marching band is one of the best around, too. They went to the state competition in 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2011, and they won a bronze medal in 2005.

Besides the public school system, Sherman is home to a couple of colleges. Austin College, a private Presbyterian liberal arts school moved to Sherman in 1876. It’s the oldest college or university operating under its original charter in Texas. Grayson County College, a community college, is based in Denison and has a branch in Sherman.

Sherman Entertainment and Parks

Sherman has a great public park system, that includes Austin Street Playground, Ely Park, Fielder Park, Center Street Park, and an Activity Center, among others. The city runs several trails, lakes, and a community pool through the Parks and Recreation Department.

For entertainment, Sherman features several shopping options, including the Oak Glen Shopping Center, Westwood Shopping Center, and several independent stores like Wal-Mart and Target. Cultural entertainment options in town include the Sherman Community Players, the Sherman Museum, and the Sherman Jazz Museum – all located near the center of town. On the north side of town, residents enjoy a cinema and a skate park.
